In thinking about and developing a suggestion, it’s a good idea to make sure you have covered all the bases.
1. Check it out
Keeping in mind the four areas where suggestions can help, take a good look at any familiar task, form or procedure and ask:
Why is it necessary?
What is its purpose?
Where is it best done?
When should it be done?
How can it be done more effectively?
2. Plan your idea
Be sure to show what needs to be improved and explain why your idea is better:
Have you looked at it from every angle?
What is the reason for the current condition?
Does your idea address the real issue?
Do you have facts, not just opinions?
Do the benefits justify the change?
Does your idea maintain or improve the quality and quantity of service?
Will your idea save money?
3. Develop your idea
Make sure you don’t overlook any details that might make your idea even better. Can any details be:
Simplified?
Combined?
Eliminated?
Rearranged?
Need Help?
If you’re not sure whether your idea will qualify for consideration, talk it over with your supervisor or departmental director. It’s still your idea and you will receive full credit.
